A speaker driver is an individual transducer that converts electrical energy to sound waves, typically as part of a loudspeaker, television, or other electronics device. Sometimes the transducer is itself referred to as a speaker, particularly when a single one is mounted in a speaker enclosure or as surface-mounted device (as in a wall-mounted speaker, car audio speaker, and so on). There are many different types of speaker drivers. The most common ones are the woofer, mid-range and high-range tweeter, as well as bass-range subwoofers, which are very common. Less common types of speaker drivers are supertweeters and rotary woofers. This article concentrates on this sort of driver, the electrodynamic type. There are others which are far less widely used: electrostatic drivers, planar magnetic drivers, Heil air motion drivers, ionization drivers (limited to high frequencies only), piezoelectric drivers, among others. See articles devoted to them for details.

  • Tweeters

A tweeter or treble speaker is a special type of loudspeaker (usually dome or horn-type) that is designed to produce high audio frequencies, typically from around 2,000 Hz to 20,000 Hz (generally considered to be the upper limit of human hearing). Specialty tweeters can deliver high frequencies up to 100 kHz. The name is derived from the high pitched sounds made by some birds, especially in contrast to the low woofs made by many dogs, after which low-frequency drivers are named (woofers).

  • Midrange Drivers

A midrange drivers is a loudspeaker driver that reproduces sound in the frequency range from 250 to 2000 Hz. It is also known as a squawker.

Mid-range drivers are usually cone types or, less commonly, dome types, or compression horn drivers. The radiating diaphragm of a cone mid-range unit is a truncated cone, with a voice coil attached at the neck, along with the spider portion of the suspension, and with the cone surround at the wide end. Cone mid-range drivers typically resemble small woofers. The most common material used for mid-range cones is paper, occasionally impregnated and/or surface-treated with polymers or resins in order to improve vibrational damping. Other mid-range cone materials include plastics such as polypropylene, Cobex, Bextrene, woven Kevlar, fiberglass, carbon fiber, or light metal alloys based on aluminium, magnesium, titanium, or other alloys.

  • Fullrange

A fullrange speaker drive unit is defined as a driver which reproduces as much of the audible frequency range as possible, within the limitations imposed by the physical constraints of a specific design. The frequency range of these drives is maximized through the use of a whizzer cone and other means. Most single driver systems, such as those in radios, or small computer speaker designs, cannot reproduce the entire audio range.

  • Coaxial Drivers

A coaxial loudspeaker is a loudspeaker system in which the individual driver units radiate sound from the same point or axis. Two general types exist: one is a compact design using two or three speaker drivers, usually in car audio, and the other is a two-way high-power design for professional audio, also known as single-source or dual-concentric loudspeakers.

  • Midwoofer Drivers

A mid-woofer (also know as a midbass) is any speaker that is capable of playing both midrange and midbass frequencies at thesame time. The mid-woofer is usually used in a comp onent speaker system consisting of the woofer, tweeter, and passive crossover. In a 2-way component system, a typical mid-woofer is usually responsible at least six octaves, ranging from 80Hz to 2.5kHz and sometimes higher. In a 3-way component system, a mid-woofer usually is used as a dedicated mid-bass and responsible for a general range between 80Hz and 250Hz, while some still go as high as 1000Hz (usually when a smaller midrange is used).

  • Woofers

A woofer is a technical term for loudspeaker driver designed to produce low frequency sounds, typically from 60 Hz up to 250 Hz. The name is from the onomatopoeic English word for a dog's bark, "woof"[citation needed] (in contrast to the name used for speakers designed to reproduce high-frequency sounds, tweeter). The most common design for a woofer is the electrodynamic driver, which typically uses a stiff paper cone, driven by a voice coil surrounded by a magnetic field. The voice coil is attached by adhesives to the back of the speaker cone. The voice coil and the magnet form a linear electric motor. When current flows through the voice coil, the coil moves in relation to the frame according to Fleming's left hand rule for motors, causing the coil to push or pull on the driver cone in a piston-like way. The resulting motion of the cone creates sound waves, as it moves in and out. At ordinary sound pressure levels (SPL), most humans can hear down to about 20 Hz.[1] Woofers are generally used to cover the lowest octaves of a loudspeaker's frequency range. In two-way loudspeaker systems, the drivers handling the lower frequencies are also obliged to cover a substantial part of the midrange, often as high as 2000 to 5000 Hz; such drivers are commonly termed mid woofers.

  • Passive Radiators

A speaker enclosure using a passive radiator usually contains an "active driver" (or main driver), and a passive radiator (also known as a "drone cone"). The active driver is a normal driver, and the passive is typically the same or similar, but without a voice coil and magnet assembly. It is only a suspended cone, not attached to a voice coil or electrical circuit. The passive radiator usually has some means to adjust its mass, thereby allowing the speaker designer to change the box tuning. Internal air pressure produced by movements of the active driver cone moves the passive radiator cone as well. Passive radiators are used instead of a reflex port for much the same reasons—to tune the frequency response, particularly in small volume enclosures and when small diameter drivers are used, for better low frequency performance. Especially in situations in which a port would be inconveniently sized (usually too long for practical box configurations). They are also used to eliminate port turbulence and reduce motion compression caused by high velocity airflow in small ports (especially small diameter ones). Passive radiators are tuned by mass variations (Mmp), changing the way their compliance interacts with motion of the air in the box. The weight of the cone of the passive radiator should be approximately equivalent to the mass of the air that would have filled the port which might have been used for that design.

  • Subwoofers

A subwoofer (or sub) is a woofer, or a complete loudspeaker, which is dedicated to the reproduction of low-pitched audio frequencies known as bass. The typical frequency range for a subwoofer is about 20–200 Hz for consumer products,[1] below 100 Hz for professional live sound,[2] and below 80 Hz in THX-approved systems.[3] Subwoofers are intended to augment the low frequency range of loudspeakers covering higher frequency bands. While the term "subwoofer" technically only refers to the speaker driver, in common parlance, the term often refers to a subwoofer driver mounted in a speaker enclosure (cabinet). Subwoofers are made up of one or more woofers mounted in a loudspeaker enclosure—often made of wood—capable of withstanding air pressure while resisting deformation. Subwoofer enclosures come in a variety of designs, including bass reflex (with a port or passive radiator in the enclosure), infinite baffle, horn-loaded, and bandpass designs, representing unique tradeoffs with respect to efficiency, bandwidth, size and cost. Passive subwoofers have a subwoofer driver and enclosure and they are powered by an external amplifier. Active subwoofers include a built-in amplifier.

  • Scan-Speak Discovery

Scan-Speak Discovery series is new to the loudspeaker market, but its defining characteristics are well known: superior sound, a solid construction, and a wide range of variants. Combining these three elements - plus a wealth of technical features and finesses - gives our customers the possibility of acquiring a tailor-made Scan-Speak solution at a lower price point compared to our other product lines.

    Woofers
Examine the wide range of midwoofers, woofers and subwoofers, and discover the benefits of superb mid- and low frequency performance. Ranging in size from 15 - 30cm, they meet several ambitions and goals, such as a linear frequency response and high sensitivity.

With black coated fibreglass cones and rubber surround, they are built for performance. Venting the aluminium baskets below the spider reduces compression, providing an improved sound. Note that all sizes are available in both 4 and 8 ohm variants. The 25 and 32mm voice coil (15 & 18cm) and 38 and 50mm voice coil (22, 26 & 30cm) variants ensure adequate motor power and power handling.

    Midranges & Full range
Both dome and cone versions are available in the midrange section of the new series. The D7608/9200 dome midrange has been known for its superior performance for decades. It features a wide dispersion, high output (92dB @ 1W) and natural clean and undistorted sound as well as compact mounting dimensions.

Within midrange products, you'll find the 10F cone full range unit. It is excellent for midrange reproduction, due to its compact and very powerful neodymium motor along with the black coated fibreglass cone and rubber surround. It tops out by producing 90dB @ 2.83V, an exceptionally high sensitivity for such a small driver. The aluminium basket contributes to the robustness of the design. The sound quality offered by this driver is a leader in the market.

You can also count on the 15M cone midrange to be there when and where you need it. With a 25mm voice coil and ferrite magnet system, it provides high sensitivity. With special attention being paid to the diaphragm and surround as differentiating parts of the product, it provides excellent midrange reproduction, complementing the woofers and midwoofers of the Discovery line.

    Tweeters
Whether you prefer dome or ring dome tweeters, Discovery has your needs covered. The D2606/922000 tweeter makes its strong presence felt thanks to a 25mm dome, ferrofluid and a rear chamber.

Expanding to include both dome and ring dome versions, the D2604/R2604 wide surround ensure that performance is impressive here as well, offering a lower cost alternative to the Scan-Speak Revelator tweeters. Add the very wide dispersion of the DX variant, along with the very low distortion of the XT variant, and some timeless units are born.

The D2608/913000 also contributes exceptionally well thanks to the built-in high sensitivity and rear chamber. This driver has been designed as a very price competitive alternative to our Scan-Speak 1" classic tweeters.

  • Scan-Speak Classic

Scan-Speak Classic line consists of all the highly-regarded drivers that have been praised and loved by so many customers over the years. This family consists of a collection of star products developed over the years. They are speakers that fully live up to the heritage of the Scan-Speak brand. The longevity and strength of these designs has been proven through decades of sales and manufacturing.
The Symmetric Drive (SD) concept with copper in the magnet system was invented by Scan-Speak . The first version of the SD system was patented in 1972. High-quality magnet system design has thus been a key feature of Scan-Speak design since the company's inception.

Several of the Classic line speakers have been attempted to be copied by others. But the same quality and the same success as the original Scan-Speak design has never been duplicated.

The Classic series consists of speakers from 3/4" tweeters and all the way up to 10" woofers.

The D2008 and D2010 ¾" tweeters are among the highly praised designs in Classic. They have enjoyed success for more than 35 years.

The D2905/9000 tweeter kick-started a new era with a line of very high quality 1" tweeters, later in a known series of 9300, 9500 and 9700.

The 13M midrange is a unique midrange, famous for utilising a dust cap made of a tweeter textile dome.

The Classic 18W and 21W designs are also highly praised, and are used in some of the most exceptional high-end products. Some feature Kevlar cones; others have the innovative Carbon fibre paper cones, aside from their availability in classic hard paper and polypropylene.

The woofers - 18W and especially 21W and 25W - are known for a relatively shallow design, suitable where not much depth is available behind the drivers.

These designs all represent the heritage of Scan-Speak. They are products designed right from the beginning, and have proven to be long-term successes in the market. They were designed by excellent engineers, based on craftsmanship and technological excellence, and combined with an audiophile approach, where all designs are evaluated by the human ear.

  • Scan-Speak Revelator

Scan-Speak Revelator family of drivers - tweeters, midwoofers, and subwoofers - has represented the Scan-Speak’s top-of-the-line collection for nearly two decades. It has consistently provided the best sounding products that money can buy.

The most recent generation of Revelator tweeters was introduced just a few years ago. The large roll surround technology represented a breakthrough in overall performance, with outstanding off-axis response, high output capability and low resonance frequency. Additional enhancements have been made to reduce distortion and power compression, such as large neodymium magnet systems for high sensitivity, and a careful design to optimise airflow in the chambers.

The new tweeter series consists of a popular dome design, which has since been attempted to be copied by other loudspeaker manufacturers. But no one has ever been as successful as the original Scan Speak design! The Revelator tweeter series also consists of the revolutionary ring radiator design, which put an end to some of the design trade-offs in dome designs. The ring radiator still offers unrivalled performance.

The Revelator series of midwoofers was introduced just before the the tweeters. The sliced paper cone technology represented a breakthrough in midrange clarity and overall smooth frequency response characteristics. The slices are filled with damping glue, which dramatically reduce break-up modes in the diaphragm.

The design of the Revelator sliced diaphragm has also been attempted to be copied. The lack of an application of damping to other designs keeps the copycats from providing a quality driver.

The Revelator series of woofers and subwoofers is the most recent addition to the series. Generally, it series provides much more cone excursion than previously available, a much more powerful magnet system, and 2" voice coils with high power handling.

Among other features, the subwoofer design utilises a strong and stiff aluminium cone design, resulting in an impressive transient response. The output is exceptionally true-to-life, with an earthshaking bass that challenges the listener to tell the difference between the real thing and its reproduction.

  • Scan-Speak Illuminator

Design know-how reaches new levels of sound performance in Illuminator products. Powerful neodymium motors with under-hung voice coil configuration serve as uniting design elements. They provide large linear excursion capability. What’s more, an extensive use of SD (symmetric drive) copper caps ensures the lowest possible distortion throughout the excursion range of the speaker.

The Illuminator tweeters are built on the heritage of the renowned Revelator D29 and R29. The compact size is one of the key elements of the Illuminator tweeter design. This small size is employed without compromising sound quality, either.

The compact design also provides a high degree of flexibility within design options for our customers. The sound quality of these tweeters is fully comparable to the renowned Revelator designs, no matter if the music is played at high or low listening levels.

The Illuminator midrange and woofers are based on compact under-hung motor systems with large neodymium ring magnets. The patent-pending motor offers a very long linear excursion, along with a very high force factor. The top plate is shaped to guide the backside airflow around the motor. Finally, the open cast aluminium chassis design of the driver is virtually free from compression.

During the design phase, extreme care and attention has been put into providing midrange clarity beyond anything previously available on the market. It takes place independent of power input, and even at very high excursions.

The cone is designed for maximum stiffness and damping. The midwoofers also feature a constrained layer paper cone design. The stiff and robust cone handles high power with ease. This assures that details transferred through the motor system are converted into undistorted sound. Transparency, details and precision at any input power are key words when describing the sound quality of the Illuminator designs.

Regarding the midrange units, a focus on maximum transparency, details, and precision gave birth to a new one-piece paper cone design with integrated dust cap and a coated foam surround. Careful design of the cone, its shape, and attachment to the voice coil means that this transducer provides the best midrange sound quality available on the market.

  • SB Acoustics Satori

SB but still wanted to go one step further and developed the series "Satori" which means as much as enlightenment or understanding in Buddhism. In this case, no costs were spared and the goal was to develop drivers that were better in all respects. The Satori speaker chassis have now been in the Intertechnik program for more than two years and if a kit had not yet been put together, it is simply because for Udo, a speaker line with only three models is not a line. As he told me, he would only start with it if it there were bass speakers in 21 and 26cm or additional mid-range ones. The idea appealed to me however, partly because the prices for the Satori speaker quality are very interesting. It was time to develop a great speaker with this.
SB Acoustics introduced several new products for 2016, including the brand’s flagship TW29BN high-end beryllium dome tweeter, part of the Satori top performing driver range. The new range, all designed in Denmark and manufactured in Indonesia, also includes new midrange and midwoofer drivers using new proprietary cones made with Egyptian Papyrus fibers, available in 5” to 9.5” sizes.

Satori is a Buddhist term for enlightenment.  The word literally means "understanding".  Satori translates as a flash of awareness.  Satori drivers are designed for subtlety and realism.

    Flex Units Loudspeaker Drivers

The Flexunits system was developed to fulfill individual data as desired, and we are able to meet even the most specific individual requirements – mechanical as well as electrical.

Fs, Vas and Qts can all be modified and the coil former can be made of either aluminium or Kapton. In special cases the cone material and suspensions can also be changed.

Gap height and coil length as well as diameter can be selected individually and the magnet size can be altered to fit the needed strength required.

For the less experienced customer, we have made a line of multipurpose drivers, represented by each size, from 4” mid-woofers through 15” subwoofers, enabling you to approach a project, the more conventional way. It is also possible to use one of the standard drivers as a raw model, and getting parameters changed in the direction you wish.

C-Quenze - our newest line of Loudspeaker Drivers.

C-Quenze drivers are based on the same technology as the Flexunits,

but use a solid die cast basket instead of the modular basket used

in Flexunits. This precludes customized basket dimensions – only our new

C-Quenze cones or cones with a similar height can be used.

The best part of energy during development was put into refinement of the performance in the midrange area. All the materials used, were picked to obtain the trustworthiest midrange reproduction. The drivers are extremely fast and move without any dynamic compression due to the mechanical construction.

For OEM customers, we are still able to make adjustments regarding the T/S parameters as well as the physical parameters – FX. Voice coil winding height, magnetic gap height and magnet sizes.

The features such as: SD system, Kapton voice coil former and under hung motor structure are still available in the C-Quenze drivers. Hexacoil voice coil winding technique is used.

The high ventilation factor through the centre pole piece, under the rear suspension and the perforation to the voice coil, are naturally kept intact, enabling the moving system to accelerate without any compression.

Frequency response curves in the C-Quenze drivers have been improved, compared to the Flexunits.

  • Mundorf Hi-Fi AMT U Series tweeters

Our goal: A ‚reduced to the maximum‘ model range of AMT tweeters which cover all possible applications in home- and studio-audio. The development engineers therefore had the task of keeping the design as simple, straightforward and versatile as possible without compromising the central AMT element -the diaphragm- which determines the tweeter‘s final sound quality. Rather, this should be further optimized based on the experience and knowledge gained from more than 15 years of our diaphragm development.
